Volumetric Weight Explained (and How to Pay Less)

Key takeaways

  • Volumetric weight = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5000.
  • Carriers bill on the higher of actual or volumetric weight.
  • Compact packing directly lowers your shipping cost.

Quick answer

Volumetric (dimensional) weight = (length × width × height in cm) ÷ 5000. Carriers charge on whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight. Compact, efficient packing lowers your volumetric weight and therefore your shipping cost — often the easiest way to pay less.

The formula, simply

Measure your packed box in centimetres, multiply the three dimensions together to get the volume in cubic centimetres, then divide by 5000. The result is your volumetric weight in kilograms. Compare it to the scale weight — the courier bills you on the larger number.

A worked example

A box 40 × 30 × 20 cm = 24,000 cm³ ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg volumetric weight. If the actual contents weigh only 3 kg, you're billed for 4.8 kg — because the parcel takes up the space of a 4.8 kg item on the plane. Shrink the box and that 4.8 kg drops.

Why carriers use it

Airlines and couriers have limited cargo space and pay for volume as well as weight. A big, light parcel occupies room that could carry heavier freight, so volumetric pricing ensures the cost reflects the space used, not just the mass. It's standard across all international couriers.

Items most affected

Light but bulky goods are hit hardest: pillows and bedding, soft toys, empty containers, snack packets, and anything shipped in oversized boxes with lots of air. For these, packing strategy matters more than the actual weight.

How to reduce it

Use the smallest safe box for your items, remove excess padding and empty space, and avoid oversized cartons. Vacuum-packing soft goods like clothing and linens can cut volume dramatically. Nesting items and filling gaps efficiently also helps.

Where ShipKorea.in helps

Our team can professionally repack your shipment to minimise volumetric weight without risking damage — often saving you money versus your original packaging, while keeping fragile items well protected.

Check before you ship

Measure and weigh your packed parcel before booking so your quote is accurate. Our calculator bills on the higher of actual and volumetric weight, so knowing both up front means no surprises on your final price.
